A short story – For the ages

When, back in July,1977, we arrived in Los Angeles, from Romania,
we went straight to the Federal Building, to apply for political asylum.

We were met by a little old lady, who was walking with the help of a very curious old cane.
She started shouting at us, that we shall never be admitted in these USA, no matter what.
She even waved the cane at us.

We said, OK and departed the Federal building, in Downtown Los Angeles.

Later on, we realized that she must have been Jewish or so. I had no idea.
Maybe a Hungarian Jew??
Some Hungarian Jewish Princess, deprived of her wealth by the Romanian Army in 1919, or so??

We had nothing to do with what happened in 1919, and yet, we were at fault, from her point of view.
We are still wondering what she was doing, holding a job in the Federal Building, at her age.

Granted, ever since then, we could never get a US GOV job, even though, highly qualified.

We kept on making a living in the private sector.

We shall never forget the hatred in her eyes, and the raised cane.

May GOD forgive her. We already did, long time ago.
