Ion Antonescu (June 2, 1882, Pitesti – June 1, 1946, Jilava Prison) Famous personality of his times, head of the Romanian state in times of sad memory, Maresal Ion Antonescu represented for Romania’s history an ever-living example of human morality and dignity, a fighting spirit in the accomplishment of the country’s aspirations, which he so proudly represented. Though a career military, and not a politician, he understood very well the meaning of the times they lived and the threat of the Bolshevism of Romania, along with all the implications that could have arisen from them, and which were later confirmed. His actions call for a heroic spirit, a man who, above all, loved the country and acted in support of her. Actions that the constraints of circumstances were forced to do were a palm of his image. It has been more than 20 years since the fall of communism, and yet no politician had the courage to assume the decision to declare him the National Hero Marshal Ion Antonescu. He declared before he was executed, “I must be condemned to death and refuse beforehand any pardon, so I will be sure that I will die on the land of the Fatherland.” “No one in this country served the people below with so much love, passion, and disinterest as I did.
